Understanding Body Fat Percentage
Body fat percentage is a more meaningful measure of body composition than weight or BMI alone. Two people at the same weight can have very different body fat levels — one might be muscular and lean while the other carries excess fat. Knowing your body fat percentage gives you a clearer picture of your health and fitness.
This calculator uses the US Navy circumference method, developed by the US Naval Health Research Center. It estimates body fat from simple tape measurements — waist, neck, and height for men, plus hip circumference for women. While not as precise as DEXA or hydrostatic weighing, it is free, requires no equipment beyond a tape measure, and provides a reliable estimate.
Why Body Fat Matters More Than Weight
Excess body fat is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other health conditions. However, having too little body fat is also unhealthy. The goal is to be within a healthy range for your gender and age, not to minimize body fat at all costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the US Navy body fat method?
The US Navy method is accurate to within about 3-4% of more precise methods like DEXA scanning. It tends to be more accurate for people in the average body fat range and less accurate at the extremes. It is significantly more accurate than BMI alone for assessing body composition.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
For men, 14-18% is considered the fitness range, while 18-25% is average. For women, 21-25% is fitness and 25-32% is average. Essential fat (minimum needed for health) is about 2-5% for men and 10-13% for women.
